Distinctive Unit Insignia

Description
A Silver color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of a shield blazoned:  Per fess embattled Gules and Argent, in chief a powder horn suspended from a spade and an antique rifle saltirewise all Argent, and in base a cogwheel of the first interlaced by a section of prefabricated Bailey bridge throughout Sable.  Attached around the base of the shield a Black scroll inscribed PER EXCELLENTIAM LIBERTAS in Silver letters.

Symbolism
The colors, scarlet and white are traditionally associated with the Engineer Corps.  The rifle and powder horn represent the Commonwealth of Kentucky and the Kentucky Army National Guard.  The rifle also refers to accuracy and military preparedness.  The bridge represents the Engineers mission and capabilities to overcome all obstacles.  The cogwheel refers to mobility and the mechanization and technical expertise of the modern Engineer Battalion.  Thirteen teeth on the wheel recall the original thirteen states of the Union and the principles and ideals that the 206th Engineer Battalion uphold and are prepared to defend.  The motto translates to Liberty Through Excellence.

The distinctive unit insignia was approved on 26 September 1988.
